awkward thanksgiving moment

So. Family friend to mom’s relatively new boyfriend “does Laura remind you of her mother when she was in high school?” “Well, Sue always had short hair.” Er, not to mention Laura is twice the age of a high school senior. But you know, whatever. At least he pretended to be shocked that I was my brother’s older, not younger sister. Oh, and this was the drunkest t-day ever so please forgive spelling errors, etc.

Disturbing Decor

And I don’t mean disturbing in a good way. Sur La Table sends me porn on a regular basis since someone gave me a gift card when I moved in here. I have to admit I do enjoy browsing some of the cookware porn. But then they have a few disturbing items. Like these chickens, with real feathers. And they say that proudly like it’s a great thing. What do you do with these things? Put them in the center of your dining room table?

This weekend I…

  1. Went to Shul.
  2. Made pancakes.
  3. Bought a vacuum. Yes, I’ve been one year without, but only one small room is carpeted. Do need it for two area rugs and furniture though.
  4. Bought two book cases and a TV table from Ikea, put them together (I’m big!) and rearranged my living room. It seems much more usable and friendly now.
  5. Ate lunch/dinner at Soul Vegetarian. Considering it was two meals I felt perfectly justified in pigging out.
  6. Wacked about half my weed before I ran out of twine.
  7. Trimmed my front yard bushes and some of the back hard before I got tired of holding the damn hedge trimmer.
  8. Made pile of yard debris by the curb for the nice men to come by and pick up later in the week.
  9. Made a pasta dish.
  10. Watched Short Cuts. If you like Raymond Carver’s short stories, this captured the spirit of his characters well.
  11. Listened to Atlanta Jewish Talk and prepared show notes for posting.
  12. Went to Madras Saravana Bhavan for yummy Indian food. Had one of my standards, Sambar Vadai, lentil donut floating in tangy Sambar soup. I also tried something new, Bhel Puri, which was puffed rice, small potato chunks, raw onion, fried peanuts, and, er, other stuff, in a kind of sweet, light sauce.
  13. Got groceries.
  14. Got more twine and finished whacking yard.
  15. Read.
  16. Vacuumed.
  17. Took possession of Jack, Matt’s dog, for a few days.
  18. Mowed the grass.
  19. Baked a cauliflower & sweet potato thing.
  20. Posted a list to my blog.

Free Stuff I Like Rocks!

Work shwag is usually limited to Koozies, chip clips and occasional movie passes. But through a happy accident I managed to get in on a free pair of shoes. And not just any random shoes, but Salomon Trail Runners. The shoes I wore stomping all over Mexico were Salomons. Stomping up and down ruin after ruin and city streets and not even a hint of a blister or foot pain. Really. Not once did my feet ache. And I sit on my ass for a living. So to get another pair is joy, it really is. As a matter of fact, I’m going to wear them today to celebrate!
