Gogol Bordello

gogol bordello at the roxy in atlanta, ga 10/19/07

Wow. Let me say that again….WOW! Non-stop, high-energy, great bunch of bouncy fun. I don’t care what kind of music you like, if you get the chance to see Gogol Bordello, do it. I was with a group of people who have all been to many, many shows and we were all basically in agreement that this was at the very least in our top five shows of all time.

Since we’re old, we got to the Roxy early and nabbed the front row of the balcony so we could sit on our asses.  The sold out crowd did Atlanta proud by being every bit as energetic as the band. I’ll have to say that Atlanta does seem to give good crowd compared to some other cities. And I was able to get a few shots with my iPhone which didn’t come out too badly.

There was also an afterparty at Lenny’s, so, what the hell, we headed over there. The band showed up and Eugene Hütz, the lead singer, was the DJ. Good stuff, but since we’re all old, and the smoke was getting to us, we left around 1:15AM or so. I was driving, so there was no drinking enough to get me dancing anyway.

NBC has let me down

This week, I had things to do Monday and Thursday night so I missed Heroes and The Office. I thought, no problem, I’ll just watch them online at nbc.com. I did that regularly last season with Heroes. Oh yeah, I have no VCR or DVR. And I’ve figured out it makes no sense to get one until I get a new TV and possibly commit to cable. And I’m not ready for that sort of outlay.

Well, their new player is unwatchable for me. Stop, start, stop, start, and so on.  What the hell? Why did they mess up something that worked great before? I don’t mind the commercials. I figure it’s the price I pay for not having Tivo or my own recording device. But I do mind it being unwatchable.

Then I remembered I had TVShows.  It’s an app that automatically downloads tv shows for you. You just subscribe to the ones you want, it automatically grabs the new episodes as they come out and downloads them for you via bittorrent. It kind of takes forever, which is the nature of bittorrent, but I cranked it up last night, went to bed, and woke up to the missed eps of Heroes and The Office. Yay!

Oh yeah, this is a Mac OS X app. There is probably something similar for Windows, but I just don’t care.

All out of ideas

Yep, it’s official, 24’s writers are all out of ideas. No wonder I fell asleep when I tried to watch Monday night. I’m going to switch to watching Heroes Monday nights and streaming 24 instead of the other way around.

Heroes, on the other hand, just keeps getting better. Let’s see if it’s sustainable. It seems like what they should do is wrap up Heroes in about 6 more episodes…and then stop. But you know they probably wouldn’t do that. They’d rather beat every bit of life out of it until it’s unwatchable. Then cancel it.
