Blackened tempeh

This borrows from a recipe that goes way back to 1996, the early days of my vegetarianism. Sometimes there is a component of a recipe that would do well in another setting. Here, the blackened tempeh makes an awesome meal with raw kale salad and mashed potatoes & gravy. It would also be amazing on a sandwich. Maybe that’s how I’ll eat it next.

Black elephant xxx-mas potluck

What’s a black elephant xxx-mas party? At Star & Simon’s, it was like a white elephant party but with random XXX gifts thrown in. Much to the surprise of some party attendees. We brought regular and porn gifts. Hilarious! And we stuffed ourselves with awesome food like we always do.

A Gutenfleischer’s roast wrapped in puff pastry, biscuits, and gravy is hiding in a crock pot.

Mac & Cheeze, sushi

Rice paper rolls and peanut sauce

Mr. Gunn’s seitanic casserole

And here’s my fatty plate.

There were desserts too but I failed at taking pictures of them for some reason.

Smoked tofu at Burnt Fork BBQ

Vegans are used to ignoring BBQ restaurants for obvious reasons. But you don’t have to ignore Burnt Fork BBQ. Each part of the menu has clearly marked vegan options. Korean tacos, spring rolls, several side choices and BBQ smoked tofu. The first time we went, they were out of the smoked tofu, so we had the tacos. They were okay, but we kind of love Hankook, Yumbii, Takorea for our Korean taco fix. It took a while but we finally got back there to try the smoked tofu. Here it is in the form of the plate.

Kale and sweet potato chips are the sides. Always get the kale. It’s really good. Kind of sweet. Love the tofu. It can be hard to taste the smokiness under the BBQ sauce, but it’s there. Anyway, it’s always nice to have another omnivore restaurant offer nice vegan options.

The Taint and lasagna

So, what to you make for a super gore-fest movie watching party? A lasagna in a red sauce, of course.

No recipe for the lasagna. I just sort of winged it. Made a red sauce with some sausage in it. Added some spinach. Vegan ricotta, Daiya.

What was this gore-fest? The Taint! And it isn’t the taint you’re thinking of, either. Do not watch this trailer if you have a problem with extreme gore, nudity, etc.

It was ridiculous and over the top in so many ways. There’s even a plot! And you can download the damn thing for $5. Best watched with a group of people eating something red and gooey.

Easy enchiladas mole

This Doña Maria ready-to-use mole sauce was a favorite to keep on hand for quick meals. It disappeared for a while but it finally showed up again at Buford Highway Farmer’s Market. Full disclosure: I have not contacted the company to check if the “natural ingredients” are indeed vegan. Maybe I should actually do that…anyway. (Update below post) Last time I posted about it, we ate it in the form of an enchilada stack. This time, I rolled up Trader Joe’s fake chicken strips fried up with onions and garlic and Daiya in flour tortillas, stuck them in a square pan, dumped the mole sauce all over then sprinkled with Daiya. Baked it for around 25 minutes at 350F and it was food. To keep all the food mud colored, we had it with a side of refried black beans, from a can all lazy like.

UPDATE: So after I posted this, I went ahead and wrote the company asking about the “natural ingredients” to make sure they were vegan. And they are! Here’s the response:

W00t!
