Texican NOMfest

Look at me all bloggin’ like I didn’t neglect the hell out of this thing for a year or more. Sadly Godaddy was hosting my blog AND my domain registration. At least now Kevin’s hosting my blog over on Dreamhost with his stuff and I’ll just move my domain when it expires. Oh, and I’ll remember, just like an elephant.

I hear there are people who don’t really care much about food and just eat whatever. I don’t know any of those people. So we get together and have these amazing potlucks. The latest had a Texican theme. Eating started pretty much immediately after we arrived.

First course: Frito Pie and a White Sangria (one of my contributions)

And here’s the spread. And this isn’t even everything.

Dranks:

Redneck caviar, stuffed jalapeños:

Jicama salad with cilantro on the side for the haters (also my contribution)

Chilimac

Fixin’s

Tamale, taquito (I think) and guacamole

Sampling chilimac, redneck caviar and a stuffed poblano

Did we save room for dessert? No, but that didn’t stop us. Chocolate flan, Mexican wedding cookie, sopapilla

And all vegan, of course. Okay, time to go finish the patriotic as fuck cake I made for tonight’s potluck. Oy.

Thanksgiving-themed vegan potluck

Oh man. The Sunday before Thanksgiving our monthly vegan lunch group (join us on Facebook) had a Thanksgiving-themed potluck hosted by the lovely Lisa & David. Two Thanksgivings in one week! Our potlucks always rock and this was no exception. Somehow we always manage to have the right mix of foods.

For my blogging about them completely unsolicited, Match Vegan Meats wanted to send me one of their holiday roasts but they ran out. So instead they sent me all the vegan meats I’d need to make one, or five. 🙂 They have the recipe posted online, so you can do it too. I didn’t follow the recipe exactly. Instead of herbed stuffing mix, I used cornbread that I added seasoning to. If you have a favorite stuffing recipe that isn’t super moist, you could definitely substitute it here. The amount you see here is a double batch of the recipe. I made a shiitake mushroom gravy to go with it. I also specifically shaped them long and thin so it wouldn’t totally dominate anyone’s potluck plate.

I think the Match went over really well. Some people hadn’t had it before so it was a good introduction. If anyone wants to comment with their thoughts on it, I know the Match folks would love to hear them.

But enough about me. There was a whole spread of deliciousness. I didn’t even get pictures of everything.

Vic posted the recipe for this root salad. I’m totally going to make it. I love eating stuff like this. Great way to make autumn/winter veggies pop.

My plate piled high. I see some mac & cheese, greens and stuffing that didn’t make it in the pics. Lisa also made a chocolate layer cake. Yum!

Vegan Potlucks Rule

Whoops. This is a little tardy. I guess I’m going to get points off on my grade for that. So I hosted the last potluck for our vegan lunch group back on May 30th. Our theme was Latin American cuisine. As always, we had a lovely spread.

Autumn Vegan Potluck

Ashley organized another fun potluck at Candler Park the weekend before Halloween. I was working on stuff for the Boston Vegetarian Food Festival, so I made Kevin make the food. He made little individual open face pot pies. Yummy! Here it is in the center of my plate surrounded by tastes of a bunch of other yummy dishes.

I really did try to take it easy and not over eat, but it’s so hard to do at these things! I mean, look at the dessert spread:

So, of course, I had to try and taste as much as possible of those as well. *blort*

And here’s a crappy picture of everyone where you can’t tell anything because it’s crappy. But seriously, there were a bunch of people at that table in the shadows where you can’t see anything because the pic is crappy.

Meet Local Vegans!

Even for those of us that live in big cities, it can sometimes be hard to meet other vegans. If your area doesn’t have some sort of meet-up type group for vegans or vegetarians, think of starting one! Or, you could always join one in the city nearest you and go hang out with them. I mean, it’s probably just once a month, so isn’t it worth the drive to experience the wonder of a vegan potluck?

In Atlanta, we have a group that meets once a month for lunch on the weekend. We either go to a restaurant or have a potluck at someone’s house or at a park. To give you an idea, a couple of things I remember making for potlucks: rose scented baklava and seitan chicken & waffles with chickpea gravy. Yeah. So if you’re an Atlanta area vegan, check it out.

And, Ashley Nicole is organizing a potluck picnic in Candler Park at the end of October. The last one rocked, so you should go!
